Costume Design 101 :: Act I, Scene I :: Act 1, Scene II :: Act II, Scene I :: Act II, Scene II

The costumes for this script were designed to visually show a split in the family between the MOM, SON, and DAD on the one hand and the DAUGHTER and her TWO ERIENDS on the other.

In Act I, Scene I the playwright has created tension between MOM and DAUGHTER and we can show that by separating them by color. In the same scene, the SON enters and dutifully does what his MOM requests. There is no tension between them.

To show the connection between MOM and SON, a similar color scheme of red and white stripes was used on both characters. The DAUGHTER, on the other hand, is dressed in darker colors to visually separate her. This supports the action in the script and helps the audience to understand, right off the bat, that sides have been drawn in this family.

ACT I, SCENE I

Scene opens with DAUGHTER, 16, laying on the couch and watching TV in her living room. She has one arm dangling up behind her head in a lazy way. Her hair is up and she's in shorts because it's a very hot day. A rotating fan is on. MOM enters returning from a day of shopping with two armfuls of groceries. She crosses to the kitchen and does a double take at DAUGHTER.

MOM
Aren't you going to get ready for tonight, dear?

DAUGHTER
I'm not going after all.

MOM
Oh I see.

DAUGHTER
Well I decided I'm not going to embarrass myself just so David can look good.

MOM
But you know we decided that this will be David's last night and you promised

DAUGHTER (with a slight whine)
Mommmmm.

SON enters just returning from Junior high baseball practice.

MOM (to SON)
Hurry and get ready 'cause we have to leave by 6:30, OK honey? Wear your linen suit, OK?

SON
'kay. (he exits)

MOM (turning back to DAUGHTER)
All the tickets have been paid for.

DAUGHTER
Well I'll pay you back for mine

MOM gives a sigh and exits.

End of scene.
