SAMPLE SCRIPT

Cast of Characters:
MOM
DAD
SON
DAUGHTER
TWO FRIENDS of DAUGHTER

TIME and PLACE:
Anytime and Anytown.

ACT I, SCENE I

    Scene opens with DAUGHTER, 16, laying on the couch and watching TV in her living room. She has one arm dangling up behind her head in a lazy way. Her hair is up and she's in shorts because it's a very hot day. A rotating fan is on. MOM enters returning from a day of shopping with two armfuls of groceries. She crosses to the kitchen and does a double take at DAUGHTER.

MOM
Aren't you going to get ready for tonight, dear?

DAUGHTER
I'm not going after all.

MOM
Oh I see.

DAUGHTER
Well I decided I'm not going to embarrass myself just so David can look good.

MOM
But you know we decided that this will be David's last night and you promised

DAUGHTER (with a slight whine)
Mommmmm.

SON enters just returning from Junior high baseball practice.

MOM (to SON)
Hurry and get ready 'cause we have to leave by 6:30, OK honey? Wear your linen suit, OK?

SON
'kay. (he exits)

MOM (turning back to DAUGHTER)
All the tickets have been paid for.

DAUGHTER
Well I'll pay you back for mine

MOM gives a sigh and exits.

End of scene.


ACT I, SCENE II              6.30PM later that same day

MOM, DAD and SON come downstairs dressed for a dinner party DAUGHTER is still on the couch. MOM, DAD and SON cross stage left and exit out the front door without saying anymore to DAUGHTER

End of scene.


ACT II, SCENE I         the next morning

MOM, DAD, and SON sitting at the breakfast table. DAUGHTER enters, she has just woken up.

DAUGHTER (kind of meekly)
Hello.

ALL (not enthusiastically)
Hello.

DAUGHTER
How was last night?

DAD
David never showed up.

DAUGHTER (wide eyed)
Really?

SON
Kathy wasn't there either. They both weren't there.

DAUGHTER
Oh my God I don't believe it.

DAD
So it turned out that YOU wouldn't have had anything to be embarrassed about. David's folks were the embarrassed ones.

DAUGHTER (staring into space)
I don't believe it.

End of scene


ACT II, SCENE II          Later that day at high school.

TWO FRIENDS are hanging out in the hallway of their high school in between classes. We join them as FRIEND #1 pulls out a cigarette.

FRIEND #2
Don't smoke that thing.

FRIEND #1
Will you stop bugging me? I don't tell you what to do.

DAUGHTER enters.

DAUGHTER
Have you guys seen David yet today?

FRIEND #2
No and I know Kathy is looking for him, too. That guy just doesn't know what he wants.

FRIEND #1
Did you hear about last night?

DAUGHTER
I was there.

FRIEND #1
You were? I didn't see you.
